Transmission is Critical for the Energy Transition

Recently it was suggested to me that images of transmission lines don't convey a message of "clean". That conversation coincided with discussions in Atlantic Canada around the Atlantic Loop and whether it was really necessary given all the wind and potential for hydrogen development in this region.


While it's true that power lines may not be visually appealing and come with various challenges like permits, inter-state and inter-provincial cooperation, and - above all - funding, they are absolutely essential to achieving our renewable energy goals.


Robust transmission infrastructure serves as the linchpin of our renewable energy aspirations. Without it, our visions of widespread wind, solar, and green hydrogen adoption will remain just that—visions.


Why are transmission lines so vital? They connect renewable energy sources to population centres, enabling efficient and reliable electricity transmission. This connection unlocks the full potential of renewables, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and substantially lowering greenhouse gas emissions.


Moreover, transmission infrastructure plays a critical role in connecting hydro resources, ensuring we have sufficient capacity even when the wind isn't blowing. This integration enhances the reliability and resilience of our clean energy systems.


This is a time when we need every tool we have to decarbonize. This includes the need for heightened collaboration and greater public awareness of how the energy system actually works. Above all, the public needs to understand that the transition to cleaner energy is going to cost money and cannot be achieved with wind and solar alone. Suggesting otherwise will undermine our collective progress.
