Lessons from Australia

Writer: Heidi LeslieHeidi Leslie

Although our energy systems are not identical, there are lessons to be learned in North America from Australia's energy transition. I am resharing this article: Australia's Grid is in Trouble because I appreciate this quote:

Addressing climate change should be about reducing emissions while keeping the lights on. It’s unhelpful to portray it as an ideological contest between different technologies. Energy industry leaders are trying to warn us there’s a shark in the water, while governments want us to believe everything is fine, to go for a swim.

It's time to acknowledge the realities: the cost of energy will continue to rise, and a carbon footprint will persist for the foreseeable future. Rather than misleading people into believing that transitioning to clean energy will be easy, cheap, or immediate, it is time to shift the conversation towards things that we can do both individually and as a society. We North Americans use an inordinate amount of energy. The most effective solutions are centered around efficiency, conservation, and demand-side management. The cleanest and cheapest kilowatt is one that isn't used.

It is far better to foster a dialogue that encourages practical and achievable solutions, rather than setting unrealistic expectations that there is an easy pathway to cheap, clean & reliable energy.
