Cross Border Electricity Trade

There has been much commentary about the recent decline in Canadian electricity exports to the United States, but cross-border electricity trade is inherently dynamic.

Export volumes routinely fluctuate in response to seasonal demand shifts, hydroelectric generation conditions, weather events, and market prices on both sides of the border.

These ups and downs reflect the integrated and responsive nature of the North American electricity grid, where energy flows flexibly based on need and availability. Temporary drops in exports are not unusual. While there has been a general decline, that has occurred over years, not months.
